When I was in college, I became an anarchist. I dedicated those four years to understanding the state, arguing against it, and seeking ways to free myself from the institution of violence.
On my best days, I still consider myself an anarchist. When the clear pitfalls and evils of the government are discussed, it’s difficult to defend the institution. I support the state only out of fear of the alternative, not because I truly believe it’s a force for good.
I mention this to introduce the YouTube short above. It’s pretty funny and grasps the brokenness of our system, the exploitation from the ruling classes, and the lack of choice we all have.
However, I was disappointed. When I read the comments, I found people somewhat aware of their situation as neo-serfs, but I saw many people distracted by pointless language.
For example, our current exploitation is considered the “American Dream.” But taxes are not restricted to America. Taxation is a universal, worldwide issue. If you live in the Congo, Russia, or Britain, there is a class of people who believe they own you and will throw you in jail if you don’t pay them.
The inability of the average person to truly grasp the depth of the issue is what depressed me when I first became an anarchist. I saw that people could not engage with the reality of their lives: the government is inefficient, the ruling classes do not care about us, laws are simply an opinion with a gun, and so on.
The issue's core is simple: Do we need the government to tell us what to do, and if we do, how much should it cost?
Overall, I don’t care if you’re an anarchist or not. I’m highlighting how little we engage with the core of an issue. Within your life, you will find struggle after struggle. Your goal is to understand the real root of the struggle.
Here, the government takes from us. This action makes us poorer and destroys our capacity to thrive and improve. So what do you do? Don’t delude yourself into believing the issue lies outside of the government’s corruption. The problem is apparent, but the solution is within yourself.
Therefore, when facing problems, strengthen yourself. Get in better shape, build a good community, and control your emotions. Ignore weak individuals, deal with your trauma, and approach life as if it rests on your shoulders.
The individualist path is difficult. However, it is the only meaningful way to face the evil of the world with competence and virtue.
