Quick quotes and ideas that keep me motivated
The Chasm of Despair is between where you once were and the person you wish to become. This chasm is long and wide and pitch black. Here, you travel the abyss to seek the better version of yourself.
While in this abyss, you will experience doubts and fears. You can’t return to your past because you’ve committed. You know too much to return to the comforts that once poisoned your soul.
But the future is so far. As individuals improve, we must face the difficulties of becoming better: better people, better friends, better lovers, better spouses, better parents, and better workers. There is nothing meaningful in a life of comfort.
You can only move forward, but the roads become more treacherous, painful, and disheartening. Every disheartening voice, failure, and pitfall will hurt your confidence and growth. You will see any slight error as a significant character flaw. When you fail to grasp a new lesson, you will see this as a sign you are not good enough for your goals. When you relapse into a vice, you will hate yourself even more because you should be beyond such addictions.
When you are at your lowest, you need encouragement. I’ve experienced that despair this week as I’ve struggled with motivation.
I want to tell stories that uplift the individual and inspire him to be his best self. To do this fully, I need to do it full-time. Transitioning from corporate work to creative work will require me to build a brand, master skills, and keep people entertained and happy enough that they will pay me to do what I love.
The importance of this goal weighs on me, but I don't want to give up. I keep a few quotes at hand to help me stay inspired, and I want to share them with you.
I hope they carry you as you transverse the chasm to the better lands you seek.
“Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark in the hopeless swamps of the not-quite, the not-yet, and the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved and have never been able to reach. The world you desire can be won. It exists.. it is real.. it is possible.. it's yours.” - Ayn Rand
“Hate what the world seeks, and seek what it avoids.” – St. Ignatius of Loyola
“If you’re up for it, kid, the world could use more heroes.”
“All men can be criminals, if tempted; all men can be heroes, if inspired.” - GK Chesterton
“The inferior man argues about his rights, while the superior man imposes duties on himself.” – Wagner Clemente Soto
“Man will rebel against everything, except his vices”
“People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” Carl Jung
“Conquer yourself rather than the world.” - René Descartes
