Sex Is A Black Box
The vast majority of people follow their whims and then build a moral philosophy around those whims. The issue with whims is that they are naturally self-destructive and require nothing great from the individual.
Sex is a great example. Individuals will have consistent principles and morals until sex is mentioned. Then, they suddenly value what feels good (their whims) over what is good. They lose themselves. Without consistent moral principles, sex becomes a den of vice, exploitation, and evil.
Let’s look at an example.
Single Motherhood, Fatherlessness, and COVID-19
A classic issue I discuss, much to the charge of others, is single motherhood. Single motherhood is a net negative with no practical, moral, or philosophical benefits. Fatherlessness and single motherhood only produce dysfunction, which can destabilize a society or community.
However, people lose their minds when you suggest there should be legal and communal punishments for single motherhood and fatherlessness. Even though such dysfunction is often the result of poor choices (i.e., seeking “fun” yet unreliable partners), not something outside of the mother’s control (like rape).
People lose their minds because sex is a black box. Everyone was fine with the government shutting down society for COVID-19. Such actions led to many terrible outcomes, such as:
An experimental vaccine being forced on the public
Gaslighting from the media
Single motherhood is more destructive to society than COVID-19. But we aren’t willing to sacrifice our freedom to have meaningless sex with strangers and unreliable people.
Sex becomes a black box because we aren’t willing to control ourselves. We have all these moral platitudes about protecting children, loving each other, and building a better society. But when it matters, the average person will not impose restrictions on his behaviors when it comes to sex. And he certainly won’t promote societal limits.
What Can We Learn From This
As I go on this journey of self-improvement, I must understand my thought processes: why do I value what I value? What do I believe in? What matters most to me?
I've always valued virtue, especially discipline. These character traits are difficult to fake and harder to cultivate. If you stick to a virtuous life, you will conduct and carry yourself in unique, powerful ways.
I also need to understand the world as it is. People are weak, and they paint their weakness as virtue. This creates dysfunction and will eventually undermine the stability of our society.
Even as you improve, never ignore the world. Keep a slight eye on it so the dysfunction never catches you off-guard.
And think critically about your own black boxes. Where do your consistency and morality go to die so you can feel good? Be critical so you can avoid these hidden mistakes.
