Become A Polymath: Freedom and Responsibility
Someone sent me this video, and I did not finish it. Debate bro discussions are thrilling spectacles for many people. But I have lost interest.
The debaters' performance and tactics are irrelevant. I will focus on the core disagreement between both men. This disagreement represents many individuals who value freedom but see the need for self-control.
What Andrew and Dave Smith Represent
Andrew represents a desire for order, faith, and strength. He is willing to forgo and curtail freedom to achieve more stability.
Dave represents the desire to be free of external influences. He wants to be left alone and live a life based on the terms he sets. He believes he should do what he pleases as long as he is not hurting anyone else.
Andrew Wilson fails to understand the degrading nature of the state. Off the top, the state kills more people than any other force, destroys economies, harbors the worst people in our society, and creates massive dysfunction through public education, welfare programs, and war. The government has and will always push for dysfunction because dysfunction is how it expands its power.
Dave Smith fails to understand that “freedom” will always fail if man is not properly directed towards virtue. In short, you cannot have a free society of single moms and atheists. PornHub does not create a generation of freedom fighters capable of shouldering the burden of responsibility. A free society can only exist with virtuous, disciplined individuals pointed towards something greater than their rights and freedoms.
What Happens To Society?
We are within a paradigm that values hedonism, nihilism, and arrogance over virtue. Our society is full of atomized individuals who lack any grasp of personal responsibility. At the same time, the average citizen loves to collectivize everything from warfare to welfare. No one wants to be directly responsible for his actions or values.
Society will collapse. We won’t go out in some blaze of glory. The collapse will be as mundane as unpaid bills, with inflation destroying the dollar's value. This collapse will not happen tomorrow, obviously. However, the degradation of our society and morals will erode any comforts we enjoy.
What Can You Do?
As I’ve said before, internal tyranny or external tyranny. If people cannot control themselves, someone or something else will control them. As issues such as crime, childhood trauma, mental health, and economic problems expand, citizens will crave a Caesar to set things right. This reality is how history has always played out.
I agree with both men. We need a virtuous populace that can enjoy various freedoms. Freedom cannot be the end goal, but it is needed to accomplish great things and live a fulfilled life. However, we need discipline to enjoy and respect our freedoms, or we will fail to protect them.
This balance can only be accomplished through personal responsibility. No external force will ever replace the need for the individual to be responsible for himself. And vice will never produce anything other than decay and ruin.
Therefore, be your own tyrant. Smoking weed and watching porn isn’t going to help you. Control your whims and focus on building yourself: make more money, grow your community, and learn more skills.
Don’t be a slave. The government will not save you. Your vices will not save you. Suffer, and you will accomplish the great goals you’ve set for yourself.
