Become A Polymath
Habitica
I like video games. Video games hooked me when I first played them as a child.
I like exploring new worlds and engaging directly with them. I like jumping, hopping, skipping, and fighting to the goal. However, I particularly enjoy games that allow me to talk my way out of trouble without firing a single shot.
I’ve struggled to discover the best ways to improve myself for a long time.
Luckily, I came across Habitica. Full disclosure: Habitica is not paying me to discuss their app. I genuinely enjoy using it.
Habitca provides three ways of tracking your actions:
Habits cover the behaviors and thoughts you want to be a part of your character. These are traits you wish to develop. “Be patient” is an example of a habit. You give yourself a point every time you succeed in that habit.
Daily tasks are repeating monthly, daily, or weekly tasks. For example, “take out the trash” is a weekly task.
The last category is one-off to-dos. For example, “taking down the bed frame” is a one-and-done task that doesn’t repeat and isn’t attached to a habit.
The Logic of Rewards and Gold
Where Habitica shines is the logic of “gold.” You can assign each task a difficulty. Once you accomplish a task, you get a set amount of gold based on the difficulty. You can then use this gold to purchase game items or “real life” rewards such as 30 minutes of relaxing.
I like this system because it helps me quantify my efforts and pleasures. I’ve rethought many things, such as junk food because I can see a tangible “price” attached to such overeating. This price robs me of the hard work I’ve done. Thus, I’m less likely to waste my resources on whims.
Additionally, I can pool all my efforts together. I’m chasing many goals. If I only reward myself for one category of goals, then I risk prioritizing one set of desires over another.
If you need help managing your rewards and tasks, I suggest Habitica. It’s free, and the free version includes an app. If you find the app useful, I suggest subscribing for $5/month, so the app has some monetary support.
Way More To Come
I’ll continue to highlight the tools, tricks, and shortcuts I’m implementing on my journey to accomplish the impossible goals I have set for myself.
With the wisdom I provide, I hope you can accomplish the goals you set for yourself.
