Hello everyone,
Free speech has been a frequently debated topic these past few months, especially with Elon Musk purchasing Twitter. However, Musk is still censoring specific topics and voices on the platform. What stuck out to me was how much people like Musk promoted themselves as “absolutists” for free speech.
No one is a free-speech absolutist. It’s crucial to remember this.
Overall, everyone has topics and words they believe are “inappropriate.” Some things have a time and place.
Fundamentally, I don’t think restrictions are wrong, especially on the private scale. The “freedom” to hurl insults at your debate opponent comes with an immense cost. We cannot delude ourselves into believing freedom is good by itself.
Discipline and discernment are better aspects to focus on. We should determine what a space should be used for and who will be in this place. If children are involved, then yes, speech should be strictly limited. If we’re looking at 4Chan, individuals are responsible for not going to these places, as 4Chan is perfectly clear about its values.
Of course, I do not believe the government should enforce these restrictions. When most people discuss “free speech,” they don’t mean the government’s ability to restrict speech but private companies’ and citizens’ ability to determine.
Lastly, although the line is not always clear, the standard should be applied consistently. Yes, we should ban the anti-semitic rhetoric, but we also need to ban the anti-white rhetoric. “History” and other such considerations shouldn’t matter.
Consistency should be the key. We can’t have fruitful and intelligent conversations about complex issues if rules are not universal.
Free speech is a good, as most freedoms are. But we must remember that freedom without responsibility is simply hedonism.

And The Heroes Have Returned
What Is A Hero?
Today’s world is lacking heroes. We seem terrified of the idea of great men and women portrayed in our fiction. We prefer hopelessness and weakness. We can’t stand the sight of greatness.
In this post, I cover the different types of heroes one may run across. I go over their strengths and weaknesses. I conclude by discussing what makes a great fictional hero.
Take a look at the blog post. Topics cover storytelling, heroes, and what makes a great story. I aim to update And The Heroes Have Returned at least once every two months.
Momma’s Old School Burgers
Stories should be centered around heroes. If those heroes are flawed, they should still want to achieve great things. A story that concludes with mediocrity is a story worth forgetting.
In Momma’s Old School Burgers, some characters are better than others. Some characters have more baggage that they bring to purgatory. But even vagabonds and criminals have to work toward their best selves.
Without self-improvement, there is nothing to make a story compelling. Debauchery provides only so much entertainment. Characters who act poorly can surprise for only so long. The man who chooses his best self truly makes for the most compelling narratives.
If you’re looking for a compelling narrative, check out Momma’s Old School Burgers. My webcomic updates every Monday and Thursday.
