Be Wise With Your Time
“The Spectacular Failure Of The Star Wars Hotel” is an interesting video chronicling the decline of the failed Star Wars Hotel. An ambitious project, Disney probably hoped for a big return on this unique idea.
Unfortunately, that did not happen. The hotel was closed in September 2023. Customers were ultimately unhappy with the experience, citing multiple issues, including technical problems and a lack of immersion.
With all that said, I want to discuss secondhand entertainment, my experience learning more about the Star Wars Hotel, and the importance of being responsible with your time.
What is Secondhand Entertainment?
I define secondhand entertainment as media that talks about something else.
Think critic reviews, Let’s Plays and even commentaries on political events.
Secondhand entertainment isn’t bad. We sometimes need to listen to others' analyses to improve media literacy. Or, as with “The Spectacular Failure Of The Star Wars Hotel,” we can learn about things and events we will never experience.
Through secondhand entertainment, we can broaden our horizons. But there is a trap built into this consumption.
The Trap of Secondhand Entertainment
“The Spectacular Failure Of The Star Wars Hotel” is four hours long. It is a monster of a video, and as I was working my way through it, I couldn’t help but ask, “Why am I here?”
The video production is excellent, and Jenny Nicholson is entertaining, but I had to stop watching.
I was wasting time. The main trap of secondhand entertainment is the emotional highs it can provide while exposing you to things and events that don’t matter to you. I never cared about the Star Wars Hotel and had completely forgotten about it. I only clicked on the video because YouTube recommended it, and I wanted a distraction.
Through the video, I got my secondhand frustrations with the hotel. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about something I couldn’t experience or change. I read the comments and engaged with the emotions of the other viewers. I skipped around and Googled certain points she discussed in the video.
In short, I wasted my time.
Spend Your Time Wisely
Everyone has forms of entertainment that help them “reset” and prepare to reengage the world. Relaxing is not some grand evil. However, I watched the video to distract myself from my work, not to relax.
That’s the distinction you must define. Are you here because you want to be distracted or to relax?
I bring this up to help you understand what I now understand. We are ineffective in our lives because we allow distractions to control us. I had no interest in this hotel, yet I’m researching it instead of doing my work. What good have I done?
If you stay focused, you can devote your time, energy, and efforts to achieving your lofty goals.
And once you have accomplished greatness, you can relax in ways that enrich your soul.
Questions To Consider
Distractions: What are some common distractions you struggle with? I would define distractions as activities that prevent you from thinking about pursuing what is important. How can you combat these distractions?
Hobbies: What are some things you like to do for fun? What do these things cost you regarding time, energy, and resources? Are they worth the cost?
Understanding Distractions: What’s the last distracting thing you did? How did you feel about it? What are you doing to avoid that distraction?
Goals and Purpose: What are your goals? Reflecting daily, sometimes hourly, on your goals and their importance can keep you focused.
