Finding the Best Advice
Recently, I’ve been listening to more podcasts. These podcasts have nothing to do with philosophy or personal growth. They are focused on art, AI, and other niche items that will benefit me and my career growth.
I’ve learned that the reality of personal responsibility applies everywhere: the people who give the best advice will place you at the center of change.
Taking responsibility gives you power. Power to change, power to build, power to thrive. Those who promote it? They want you to succeed. They believe in your ability to tackle life head-on.
Individuals who want you to fail, whine, and quit will tell you that your future and happiness lie in others. Why didn’t your book succeed? Because you’re black, and society is racist. Why aren’t you being represented in entertainment? Because everyone is homophobic.
I miss heroes. I wish to see heroic characters in the works I consume and create. I find no pleasure in complaining about the state of fiction. Thus, artists, coders, and philosophers teaching me how to improve in storytelling should always focus on giving me the tools to drive my future.
I assume you, too, have great dreams that lie outside of virtue and self-improvement. If you want the best advice for the field you wish to master, find teachers who put you in the driver’s seat and demand you push yourself.
Anyone who seeks to externalize your responsibilities as a creator is not your friend. Ignore them and find others who will take the job seriously.
