What Does It Mean To Be Better?
I was drawing a panel for an upcoming comic where Michelle is walking. I was rather impressed with how I did the lines, the walking action, the positioning of the feet, etc. In short, I recognized that I had improved my art.
I started working on Momma’s Old School Burgers in September 2020. I had the idea for years but finally dared to execute my desires. In those four years, my art has steadily improved.
I don’t need an outside force to tell me this. Am I the best? Absolutely not. I wouldn’t even rank among the top 100,000,000. But I know that I have improved.
But what does that mean?
Improvement and Understanding Your Progress
There is and will always be a gap between what you can and want to do. Individualism helps because you can use yourself as a baseline for judging your progress.
We all have an idealized self in mind. This vision is crucial for helping us understand where we ought to be. Once we understand this vision, we can direct our efforts toward becoming that idealized person.
You rarely need the world’s validation. You know what being better, fitter, patient, and virtuous means. You aren’t perfect, which is why outside sources are needed. But you can’t pretend you do not know whether or not you have improved and what such improvement looks like.
Self-Improvement Is Very Straightforward
Don’t overcomplicate the process of self-improvement. Most of the time, improving is simply waking up, eating breakfast, avoiding your vices, drinking water, and doing all the simple things the world were never told you to do.
Recently, I’ve felt overwhelmed by what I’m trying to do. I convinced myself that I wasn’t improving. However, I realized and recognized that I am improving in small but necessary ways.
The mindset I’ve accepted is focusing on daily habits. Push past the doubtful thoughts by refusing to entertain them.
I hope you are improving.
