Hello everyone,
When trying to improve your life, you will stumble upon many different philosophies, ideologies, and beliefs competing for your support.
Admittedly, I am no different. But I have acknowledged before that individualism cannot stand alone.
That being said, there are two easy ways to determine who wants you to improve and who wants to enslave you.
1. Who Wants To Give You More Power?
Power is “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events.”
A false philosophy seeks to enslave you to weak individuals, vices, and institutions. People you can trust will push you to embrace responsibility for yourself, especially by curtailing your vices.
Think about it: how free are you when you buy more and more junk from corporations? Do you feel you have more power the more knick-knacks you have?
Or do you feel in charge of your life when you vote? How powerful do you feel when you see politicians waste your time and money on themselves?
You feel triumph when you defeat a vice or achieve a goal. You gain power by being greater than your weaknesses. The people who remind you of this and offer concrete advice on pursuing this path are more likely on your side than not.
2. Are Your Vices Criticized, Supported, Or Excused?
Your vices make you a slave. The more vices you have, the less control you will have over your well-being.
For example, how strong can you be if you overeat? How well do you feel after another sugary meal? How easy is it to physically help others? You are free to eat crap, but you are not free to be useful.
Typically, the people who shame you for your vices and offer a way to free you from them are your allies. The people who want you constantly consuming porn, TV, or other meaningless distractions are desperately tying you down.
Individualism Is The Best Foundation
What I love about individualism is that it provides no comforts: you must fight against your worst self. You have to aim higher than the person you are today.
Because of these realities, you can be confident that any individualist is trying to point you in the right direction. They may not agree with everything you believe, but anyone fighting to become their best selves is on your side more than they are not.
