Hello everyone,
There’s come a time when we understand that we cannot please everyone. Some people aim to be miserable, and they desire nothing else.
A while ago, I read an article from Bounding Into Comics about an artist who managed to offend the easily offended. The artist had drawn the classic Little Mermaid into a scene from the new Little Mermaid. People were unhappy that the artist chose the “white version” over the “black version.”
I’ve seen other cases of these people complaining about how art is depicted. They demand more representation and diversity. They scold anyone who disagrees or desires a different outcome.
Even when these complainers get what they want, they are never satisfied.
Such people want to be miserable as their misery is the only thing that makes them unique. Their complaints come not from a desire to experience closure. But from a desire to bully others and seek emotional highs.
If I’m ever blessed enough to get any popularity with my fictional worlds, I will never seek to please these complainers. They will complain I have white characters in my cast; they will complain characters are too heroic; they will complain my characters don’t act “black” enough; they will complain there are too many good endings, and so forth.
There is no pleasing these people. I’m focusing on art, but these people are everywhere: in the checkout lines, HR departments, social media, and your family. The complainers, the losers, the incompetent individuals who can never do better than you but will always complain you are never doing enough.
They will bully, scold, threaten, and insult you until you are feeble and broken. Withstand them. Push back. Tell them again and again that they are wrong. This mob may seem dangerous, but it can be defeated.
