Become A Polymath: “Freedom To Versus Freedom From”
I’ve always been a fan of freedom. But I’ve always conceptualized freedom as a burden.
You are responsible for yourself. If you are responsible for your actions, then you have to deal with the consequences of the good and bad that you do. This immense personal responsibility would incentivize the average person to improve their behavior.
For example, if individuals are responsible for their retirement, they will budget and plan accordingly. Since the government would not bail them out with social security, they would naturally be more responsible with their spending and life plans.
Understanding How People Truly Work
However, as I’ve aged, I’ve had to accept most people want to be slaves. They want to be slaves to their vices, addictions, the ruling classes, and the elites.
They want to be enslaved to their emotions and whims and commanded by something other than their virtues.
For many modern people, being “free” is discovering new ways to seek pleasure for your body.
Focus On Being Free To Pursue The Good
Although disheartening, I haven’t let this reality undermine my view of freedom.
I wish to be free so I can pursue what is good. I want to be free to build this business and give individuals the hope and direction they need to become their best selves.
I must be free of a meddling government, scornful elites, and jealous mobs to accomplish this goal. But more importantly, I have to be free of my vices, addictions, and excuses. I must have immense self-control to ensure my freedom is used for the best ends.
So, think critically: why do you want to be free? Keep asking this question and critiquing your answer as you build your desired life.
Keep focused on the goal, and good luck with your progress.
