Become A Polymath: How To Reduce The Chance of Burnout
A few days ago wasn’t a good showing for me. I was distracted, bitter, and didn’t accomplish much. In short, I wasted a day because I was burnt out.
Burning out is a real thing similar to depression or anxiety. However, we can overcome and regulate these feelings. We should never accept anything as inevitable and unconquerable.
Here are a few things I do to reduce my chances of burning out:
Always aim for eight hours of sleep. Sleep repairs the mind, energizes the body, and replenishes the soul. You’ll lose time but regain most of it because of your better mood, sharper mind, and greater focus.
I exercise every day. I may do a light workout, heavy lifting, running, or stretching, but I must stay physical to keep the blood pumping.
I spend at least four hours a day with the family, including dinner, talking to the wife, reading to the kids, going on walks, etc.
I eat three healthy meals a day and drink a gallon of water. Good food and clean water keep your brain sharp and your body replenished.
I avoid contentious topics, politics, and media. There’s no value in politics. I vote when the time comes, then go back to my life. No politician will save me; chasing emotional highs will drain my vitality.
I work on projects that I enjoy but aren’t the most productive. There are a few games I’m years away from creating, but I like to dabble in the code, regardless. It’s not the best use of my time, but it keeps me excited, which prevents burnout.
The techniques above should help you on whatever self-improvement journey you are on. Do not condemn your need for rest. Simply make it fulfilling so you can get back into the fight.
